For decades, the West Point Mint remained virtually unknown to the public. Throughout this time, it functioned primarily as a precious metals repository. The W value ranges from $10 to $150+ USD.
Where Is the West Point Mint Located?

The West Point mint location is on the grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point. The complex is located in a protected area along the Hudson River, surrounded by the academy's historic buildings and defenses.
In contrast to other mints, such as those in Philadelphia or Denver, the West Point Mint maintains its privacy. It is also closed to tours.
A multi-layered security system operates inside and in the Mint's auditorium, serving two main purposes:
Production of bullion coins
Storage of gold reserves
The site for the West Point Mint was selected in 1937. At that time, the complex opened as a precious metals storage facility. It utilized existing military security infrastructure to protect the mint's vast reserves of precious metals.
History and Role of the West Point Mint
The development of this space has spanned 90 years. The table below presents the key events over this long period.
Year | Event |
1938 | Opened as the West Point Bullion Depository |
1974 | Began striking circulating pennies (no mint mark) |
1983 | First use of the “W” mint mark |
1986 | Became the sole producer of American Gold Eagle bullion |
1988 | Officially gained U.S. Mint status |
1996 | Produced the rare W Roosevelt Dime for the 50th anniversary |
2019 | Produced the first W items released into circulation |
Primary Roles of Official Mint Production
On March 31, 1988, the facility was officially designated as a branch of the United States Mint. This changed its role from a secondary support site to a specialized production powerhouse.
Bullion Production: It is now the exclusive or primary producer of the American Eagle series (Gold, Platinum, Palladium, and Silver Eagle).
Commemorative & Proof Coins: It strikes a vast array of high-relief, proof, and uncirculated coins specifically for collectors, almost always bearing the "W" mark.
Strategic Reserve: It continues to serve as a high-security depository for a significant portion of the U.S. gold reserves (currently valued at over $180 billion).
What Is a W Quarter?

Items with the W mintmark were produced exclusively for collectors and sold by the Mint in premium sets. This process changed with the America the Beautiful Quarters program.
The Mint announced that during the final two years of the program, 2019 and 2020, it would issue two million W pieces for each of five annual designs through Federal Reserve banks – a total of ten million per year.
The W item became the first West Point coin to circulate since the experimental cents of the 1970s. The W program included five designs in 2019:
Frank Church River of No Return Item
American Memorial Park
San Antonio Missions
War in the Pacific
Lowell
2020 Items
National Park of American Samoa Item
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller
Tallgrass Prairie Item
Salt River Bay
Weir Farm
The reference to W New Orleans - French Quarter belongs to a different series, as the New Orleans quarters use the mintmark O of the historic New Orleans Mint, rather than the W of West Point.
West Point Quarter Value and Why W Quarters Are Special

Why are W items special? Three factors converge below. First, the low mintage of two million per design contrasts sharply with Philadelphia and Denver issues, which often exceed 200 million per design. This scarcity makes the West Point quarters difficult to find in circulation.
Second, the West Point Mint mark items represent a numismatic first – the first circulating coins from a facility previously reserved for bullion and collector products. Third, the 2020 quarters worth money carry an additional distinction: the V75 privy mark on the obverse.
This small incuse V75 to the left of Washington's portrait adds the history and commemorative interest. The three factors push the 2020 W quarter value above the 2019 issues in comparable condition.
Grade | 2019 W Quarter Value | 2020 W V75 Quarter Value |
Circulated | $10–$20 | $15–$30 |
Uncirculated | $25–$45 | $35–$65 |
MS-65 | $70–$110 | $85–$140 |
MS-67+ | $500–$2,000+ | $800–$4,000+ |
How to Identify a W Mint Mark Quarter
Check the Date
Flip the coin to the obverse, look at the bottom for the year. 2019 issues are the first W mint mark quarter value ever released into circulation. 2020 issues include the W mark plus an additional V75 commemorative mark.

Note: If the date is 2018 or earlier, or 2021 to 2026, it will not have a W coin mint mark meant for circulation.
Locate the Mint Mark
The mint mark is a small capital letter located on the obverse (heads) side. Look to the right of Washington’s ponytail and to the left of the motto. The Letter – you are looking for a clear W.
If you see a P, it was minted in Philadelphia.
If you see a D, it was minted in Denver.
If you see a W, you have found a West Point quarter.
“The future of numismatics may have arrived in a single pocket-change coin [2019-W].”

West Point Mint Quarters Released by the U.S. Mint

For collectors, the term West Point Quarter usually refers to two distinct categories: the rare circulating items from 2019–2020 and the collector-only items struck at West Point for special sets.
Nowadays, there is a high interest in whether the Mint will repeat the circulation surprise for the Semiquincentennial (250th Anniversary). Here is the current status of quarters with W mint mark.
Circulating Items
The 2019 Great American Coin Hunt has 5 designs, 2 million each. Features the W mint mark. The 2020 WWII 75th Anniversary includes 5 designs, 2 million each. Features the W mint mark AND the V75 privy mark.

The U.S. Mint 2021–2026 has not released any W quarters into general circulation since 2020. For the current 2026 Semiquincentennial series, circulation coins are being struck only at Philadelphia and Denver.
2026 Semiquincentennial Items
Declaration of Independence Item – expected summer 2026
Mayflower Compact Item – limited sets
Gettysburg Address Item – fall 2026
Revolutionary War Item – limited sets
U.S. Constitution Item – summer 2026
The 2026 pieces represent a one-year-only redesign. Many of the premium Gold and Silver versions of these items are being struck at West Point, and continue its tradition as the Precious Metals Mint.
West Point Mint Silver Eagle Coins Explained

The Silver Eagle program provides investors with a convenient way to store silver bullion guaranteed by the United States government.

Silver | .999 |
Obverse Designer | Adolph A. Weinman |

The West Point Mint produces three varieties of silver eagles. The investment version is sold through authorized dealers and bears no mintmark, but is produced at West Point. The uncirculated (burnished) version bears the W mintmark and is supplied in a protective capsule. The proof version has a small mintage to create mirrored fields and matte images.
West Point proof silver eagles command the highest price premiums; for example, early 1986 silver eagles sell for $50-$100 or more. For investors, the investment version follows the spot price of silver plus a small premium. For collectors, a West Point silver eagle in certified MS-70 or PR-70 condition can sell for two to five times the value of the precious metal.
Are West Point Mint Coins Valuable or Rare?

The short answer is that it all depends on the issue date. The 2019 and 2020 W items aren't rare in the absolute sense – two million pieces of each design are minted.
But compared to ordinary mintages of over 200 million pieces, W-marked items are 100 times rarer than their Philadelphia or Denver counterparts. This relative rarity, combined, keeps W mint quarters' prices in the $10 to $150 range, depending on condition.
Some West Point issues are truly rare, such as the 1995 proof version of the US Silver Eagle with the W mark, issued for the 10th Anniversary Set. Westpoint quarters from 2019 and 2020 don't fall into this elite category of rarity, but they remain valuable.
