The twenty-pence series in the Isle of Man was launched in 1982, and since then, the island has developed a solid monetary base, which currently consists of regular circulation strikes and non-circulating issues, made of platinum, silver, and gold.

Although the highest bullion value within the program (the gold coins) is ~640 euros per piece, the numismatic Isle of Man 20p worth generally exceeds €2,000 (the highest asking price, recorded on eBay). In 1982, when the United Kingdom took one more step within the decimalization initiative and introduced the twenty-pence coin (after the earliest decimal UK florin coin, the 5p, 10p, valuable 50p, 1/2p, 1p, and 2p), the Isle of Man consistently followed the same direction and implemented this denomination on their own, too.

As such, the coin was to meet the standards of its British counterpart, i.e., the seven-sided shape, the size, and certain attributes, found on the design (the main motif of the obverse side). The series has always been congruent, and there appeared numerous reverse variations of both regular and commemorative sense. 

Design and Specifications (General) 

Although the designs differ from issue to issue (which could be seen on the table above), the series has largely retained the same basic format and technical standards.

Obverse: In general, the obverse design demonstrates the portrait of the reigning monarch (a few variations of the profile of Queen Elizabeth II and one portrait of King Charles III), the name of the country and the monarch (e.g., "ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II") along the rim, the mint mark "PM", and the year of mintage below.

Reverse: The reverse design changed a few times, and each type featured the denomination and the following symbols, which included Viking arms and armour, an Atlantic herring, a combine harvester, race cars, Rushen Abbey, the Castle Rushen Clock, a Viking longboat, and a mountain hare.

1984 20p Gold Proof

Mintage: 150

Bullion Value: €622.37

Possible Asking Price: ~€6.44

This was the lowest-mintage gold proof issue released as part of a wider precious series, meant to commemorate the quincentenary of the College of Arms. It depicted the Atlantic herring on the shield, and even though it was not the first 20p coin in the program, it still belongs to an early group of non-circulating Manx collector issues struck in precious metals.

Here is one more non-circulating platinum proof that continued the tradition of the previous design with the Atlantic herring on the reverse side. Numista mentions the rarity index of 100/100, which points to the rarity of the coin produced.

1982 20p Platinum Proof

Mintage: 250

Bullion Value: €615.98

Possible Asking Price: ~€1,840

The denomination's debut took place in 1982, and during the first year, the series welcomed a complete list of proof versions, including the one made of platinum. Its reverse features Viking arms and armor, namely a winged helmet, breast plate, swords, spears, battle axes, daggers, and a shield with an emblem.

1996 20p Silver Proof

So as to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Manx decimal coins, the Pobjoy Mint issued the 1996 20p racing cars proof edition with one of the most modern reverses within the series. The motorsport design was featured further, yet on the coins made of cupronickel instead.
