The American Silver Eagle Design

Adolph A. Weinman bought out this classic Liberty design you’re seeing.

an image of 2025 dollar coin. The observe features Lady Liberty. The reverse shows an eagle.

Observe: Lady Liberty in her full glory. She strides with the sun behind her. Liberty’s right hand extends. Her left hand carries branches of laurel and oak. The inscriptions “LIBERTY” arch her. The words “IN GOD WE TRUST” take the right side below. The date “2025” is at the bottom of her feet.

Reverse: An eagle ready to land. The bird is carrying an oak branch.  Inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arch the upper-left part. The words “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” arch the right-bottom part.

Originally, there were rumors about design changes from the 2024 version, but the iconic engraving stayed the same.

The Mints

The United States Mint at West Point, the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint.

Fun fact: the original design was introduced 100 years ago. This dollar purposefully repurposed the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph A. Weinman from the 1916 half dollar.

Brief History of the American Coin 2025

  • The Liberty Coin Act of 1986 introduced the official silver bullion coin of the United States. A bullion coin is purposefully made from precious metals to be sold.

  • John Mercanti designed the piece, featuring Adolph A. Weinman's "Walking Liberty" to symbolize American craftsmanship and liberty.

  • In 1997, the Mint first released American Eagle Platinum.

  • In 2021, the series restarted. It underwent a major redesign with a new obverse and a reverse. This redesign also added advanced security features against counterfeits.

Silver Eagle 2025 Varieties

Usually, the piece is categorized by mint marks and special releases.

The 2025 American Eagle silver coin has a strange case. Mint marks show up only on certain editions: Proof, Burnished, and other collector editions. Otherwise, they show no mark at all.

There are 3 mint mark types:

  • West Point (W) pieces.

  • Philadelphia (P) pieces.

  • San Francisco (S) pieces.

Out of them, the dominant one is the 2025 W silver eagle.

It’s better to classify these coins by editions.

There are 6 editions:

  • Bullion release.

  • Proof release.

  • Burnished (Uncirculated) releases.

  • 2025 privy Silver Eagle release.

  • Colorized release.

  • Special Occasion release.

Please note.  The 2025 Silver Double Eagle $2 coin is not a variety. It’s a completely different coin with a unique design and value.

Bullion Pieces

a 2025 silver eagle with no mint mark.

Minted at: Primarily West Point; occasionally Philadelphia or San Francisco.

Mint Mark: None.

Value: About $40. The face value is $1.

The US Mint has released a Bullion Strike yearly since 1986.

Each strike is 99.9% pure silver. The coins are packaged in green “Monster Boxes”. Each contains 500 pieces.

Proof Pieces

a 2025 silver eagle with a W mint mark.

Minted at: West Point.

Mint Mark: "W". The mark is on the reverse, under the eagle’s tail feathers.

Value: About $90.

The 2025 proof Silver Eagle is also produced early. Only 2009 saw no proof release due to a silver shortage.

Proof coins are usually struck with higher quality than Bullion Strike coins. Most have a cameo effect, giving the coin a black-to-white contrast. Proof coins are struck in far less often quantities than the bullion variety.

Burnished (Uncirculated) Coin

a burnished 2025 eagle coin.

Minted at: West Point.

Mint Mark: "W". The mark is on the reverse, under the eagle’s tail feathers.

Value: $60–$90. Higher-quality pieces could go for a higher value.

Burnished pieces are in many ways similar to the proof coins. They are few and made for collecting. The main difference is the look. Burnished pieces have a matte finish and are less shiny.

2025 Silver Eagle Privy

a 2025 silver eagle with a special mark of the Eagle on the observe.

Minted at: Philadelphia.

Mint Mark: "P". This version also has a special mark of an eagle. Look on observe side, above the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

Value: $40–$100. The 2025 Eagle privy Silver Eagle offers a lot of value.

What is a privy mark? Outside the US, privy marks signify where coins were struck. Because the US mint mark already had this function, privy marks signify something else.

Privy marks signify special releases, usually commemorating specific dates.

The 2025 Silver Eagle privy mark marks the second appearance on a U.S. Mint bullion coin. These coins have a limited mintage of 500,000. It makes the 2025 Silver Eagle with privy mark one of the rarer varieties.

Some fans were disappointed that we didn’t see the 2025 Star Privy Silver Eagle release. Instead of an eagle mark, there would be a star mark, like in 2024. Maybe we’ll see a 2025 privy mark Silver Eagle with a star one day.

Colorized Editions

a colorized silver eagle with a golden ring alloy.

Minted at: Philadelphia, West Point.

Mint Mark: No mint mark.

Value: $60–$90.

This category is very wide. There are many different colorized coin releases. Some use gold plating and black ruthenium accents.

Very often, colorized versions are not the official releases, so their numismatic value may be reduced.

Special Occasions Editions

a 2025 eagle in a festive-themed package.

Minted at: Philadelphia, West Point.

Mint Mark: No mint mark.

Value: $40–$45.

Special editions show that this coin is so iconic. Various market dealers started selling them in packages, specifically designed for various occasions. Birthdays, Easter, The Fourth of July, Graduation, Father’s Day, etc.

The coin itself is not valuable. Only the packaging is themed and special.

Dollar Grading

Coin grading helps to find the highest-value piece. Usually, they range from “Good” to “Mint State”.

Yet this dollar has only high-quality ratings because:

  • The 2025 Silver Eagle mintage is extremely recent, and these coins physically can't have enough wear to lower their rating.

  • The 2025 American Eagle silver dollar is made for collecting foremost, so they are struck with more care. It results in a high grade.

2025 Counterfeits

The 2025 Silver Eagle coin series is one of the most collected and valued modern pieces.

Of course, some shady groups decided to sell counterfeit coins under the name “2025 1 oz American Eagle silver coin.”

Some replicas are very realistic, even 2025 Silver Eagle Eagle privy based counterfeits. Yet there are still ways to identify most pieces.

Fake clue

How to identify

Description

Poor quality with incorrect dates.

Look at the date on the observe’s bottom side.

Overall quality is questionable.

The whole design is pretty close, but it looks wrong. The details are carelessly engraved, and the production quality is bad.

Wrong weight.

Put the coin on a scale. The real deal is 31.103 grams.

All original pieces are precisely 31.103 grams. It’s hard to replicate the exact weight, especially when the conmen try to use a cheaper material.

Non-magnetic.

Use a magnet on the questionable piece.

The real deal is magnetic due to its high silver composition. The faker is probably a steel core with only a layer of silver over it.
