Elizabeth Peratrovich (1911–1958) was a civil rights leader. Her greatest accomplishment is how she transformed Alaska’s social and political landscape. She was one of the Alaskan natives, and when settlers came, her people faced discrimination.
Elizabeth Peratrovich decided to fight back, but with words. She made numerous speeches about the problem that pushed the United States to outlaw racial discrimination.

The U.S. Mint’s decision to feature Peratrovich on the 2020 Native American $1 Coin honors her vital contributions to American history.
