The design of many specimens remains the same across all specimens for many years since the end of the 19th century.

The main characteristic of the Swiss franc banknotes and coins is adherence to tradition and stability. And regarding this stability, one of the main examples is the 10 Rappen, which is one of the oldest coins in the world currently in circulation. Its design has practically not changed since 1879.

Swiss specimens also have high wear resistance. They also use abbreviations or special symbols that are unique to the four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.

Banknotes

Among Swiss franc banknotes coins, the banknotes themselves also stand out. The Swiss National Bank issues some of the most technologically advanced and beautiful banknotes in the world. They feature a complex security system and an interesting design.

As for the design, unlike other countries where portraits of famous personalities are depicted, Swiss francs depict various aspects of the country. In fact, most elements also resemble parts of the Dollar Bill.

Regarding security features, these include:

  • Numerous holograms

  • Microtexts

  • Embedded elements

  • Color-shifting inks

  • And many other innovative technologies, making them virtually impossible to counterfeit.

One of the most famous and sought-after is the Swiss Vreneli gold coins. They are the most recognizable and popular gold coins from Switzerland. The obverse depicts Helvetia with braids against the background of the Alps.

She is named "Vreneli," which is a diminutive of Verena. The reverse features a Swiss shield against the background of an oak branch. This specimen is valued due to its historical significance, design, high minting quality, and popularity in the international market, making it a good option for investments in 2025

The value of this specimen depends on the spot price of gold, as well as the collector's premium, which can also change.

Swiss Silver Coins

Until 1968, Swiss specimens with denominations of 1, 2, and 5 francs contained silver.

However, after 1968, following a rise in global silver prices, it happened that their intrinsic value nominally exceeded their face value. This is precisely why these specimens were withdrawn from circulation and changed to other metals.

Therefore, for 1 and 2 franc coins from 1968, and for 5 franc coins from 1969, copper-nickel alloys began to be minted. So, specimens from before this time contain 83.5% silver, and their value will be determined by weight and the current price of the metal, but these earlier silver versions are generally quite valuable specimens.

In the 19th century and earlier, Switzerland issued various silver coins. These included Thalers, Batzen, Francs, and completely different ones.

Swiss Gold Coin Prices and Value

Spot Price

As has been stated, metal prices strongly influence gold specimens. This also applies to gold. Because gold specimens contain a large percentage of pure gold, their minimum value will always be equal to the value of the metal at the current market price.

This is a rather unpredictable factor, and it fluctuates greatly daily. That is, if a 20 franc coin contains 5.806 grams of pure gold, its minimum value will be calculated as 5.806 multiplied by the current price of gold per gram.

Numismatic Premium

The numismatic premium is an equally important point to consider. This is the markup on the metal's value that a coin acquires due to its rarity, historical significance, condition, popularity, and other minor factors.

For Vreneli, for example, the value is usually not that high; however, if there are any rare issues, such as 1926 or perfect condition, Uncirculated or Proof, then the price will be higher than others.
