Official 2026 Dime Design: What’s Changing and Why

For only one year, the United States Mint replaces its beloved, long-running coin series with new designs to celebrate the Semiquincentennial, i.e., the 250th anniversary of American independence. 

In 2026, this one-time change reaches quarters, half dollars, and dimes – some of the most widely used coins in everyday circulation.

Dimes, however, differ from the rest: the design has already matured and turned into something that the public is eager to hold and collect. What will these rare coins look like? When are they planned to be released? And how much may they cost the moment they hit circulation?

Overview of the 2026 US Dime: The Background

Coins involved: Updated dimes, quarters, half dollars + regular nickels and cents + reproductions

The new dime 2026 is a numismatic creation subject to a one-year redesign, meant to perpetuate the United States Semiquincentennial (250 years since American independence) in metal – for generations to come. The first 10-cent coin of the regular series was issued 80 years ago (it is the well-known 1946 Roosevelt dime). 

Over the years, its design has not been really altered (only the composition was adjusted after the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965). 2026 seems like the right time to break that long streak. The key feature is one particular inscription positioned on each coin, i.e., the dual date “1776 ~ 2026”.

New Dime Design 2026: Features and Specs

Obverse: The front side shows a new, more determined version of Lady Liberty (“Emerging Liberty” portrait), wearing a cap with stars and stripes, as well as the inscriptions “LIBERTY” along the upper-right part of the rim, a mint mark to the right of the profile, the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” just below the mint mark, the date “1776 ~ 2026” along the lower-left part of the rim, and the initials “EA” referring to the designer Esao Andrews.

Reverse: The back features an eagle, holding arrows in its talons while in aggressive flight, as well as the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” along the upper rim, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” just below the previous phrase, the engraver initials “EC” to the left of the eagle's talons, the denomination “ONE DIME” below the eagle, and “LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY” beneath.

Gold Mercury Dime 2026 Explained: True Yet with Nuances 

When people refer to the 2026 gold mercury dime, they usually mean the reproductions released under the Best of the Mint Program. Originally, the initiative was introduced in 2024, and it involves modern reissues and special set releases that revisit some of the Mint’s most iconic designs. The only distinction between the original coin and the 2026 Mercury dime reproduction would be the Liberty Bell/250 privy mark on the obverse side.

The 1916 Mercury Dime set is to feature the classic reissue in 24k (99.99%) fine gold, as well as the one-ounce silver companion medals with a new, modern design inspired by the original. The Best of the Mint Set goes on sale on April 30, 2026, with a stated household order limit of 1. 

What the 2026 Dime Could Be Worth? 

According to the US Mint, there are two “values” to keep straight for the 2026 dime:

1. In everyday circulation (face value), it is still a 10-cent coin, so normal 2026 dimes are worth $0.10 as legal tender.

2. As a Mint product (the price from the collector's perspective),  the Mint distributes these numismatic creations primarily through annual sets. For 2026, the Mint lists the following: 

• Silver Proof Set 2026: $245.00

• Proof Set 2026: $107.00

• Uncirculated Coin Set 2026: $124.50

Keep in mind that the Mint’s Semiquincentennial page mentions bags and US coin rolls only for the five quarter designs, plus half dollars and dollar coins. That said, it is only possible to get the new dimes via sets (or from circulation, should you be lucky enough to do so).
