What Are Bicentennial Coins

As you might have guessed by the name, bicentennial coins are special commemorative coins produced to celebrate the 200th anniversaries. The anniversary itself depends on the event, but in the case we are analyzing today, it was the anniversary of American independence in 1976. 

Independence, gained by the American people in 1776, is a monumental event for all Americans. It was no surprise that instead of regular issues, the U.S. Mint released unique designs across the quarter, half-dollar, and dollar denominations. All are bearing the dual date “1776–1976.” 

These American Revolution bicentennial coins are legal tender. The most recognizable among them is the Bicentennial quarter. Likely the reason for such popularity is that among all denominations, the quarter got the most exclusive Independence-inspired design.

American Revolution Bicentennial Coin

The American Revolution Bicentennial Coin Program was authorized in the early 1970s. In 1976, three commemorative designs were issued:

• Bicentennial Quarters

• Bicentennial Half Dollars

• Bicentennial Dollars

Each denomination included special designs that departed from the standard imagery used in regular circulation. These coins were produced in vast numbers, over a billion.

However, the mintage numbers go even higher when you remember special collector versions like proof sets and 40% silver strikes. Proof sets came from the San Francisco mint and featured bits with exquisite details. 40% silver strikes 

These revolutionary (in many ways) bits quickly became popular. Some were sold individually, others were sold in bicentennial coin sets. Their popularity could not be overstated.

Valuable Bicentennial Quarter Coins

We already know that the bicentennial quarter release was the most popular. With popularity comes demand, and with demand comes value. You might think that American bicentennial coins would be very valuable, then. In reality, the situation is difficult.

Most Bicentennial quarters you’ll find in change are worth only their face value (25¢), especially the common clad versions. However, several varieties and conditions can be worth more. What affects the value?

1. Condition (grade)

• Condition is the single most important factor affecting value.

• Circulated bits with wear are usually worth face value.

• Uncirculated bits (in Mint State) are often worth at least a few dollars over face value.

2. Composition (metal content)

• Copper-nickel clad versions were circulation strikes. Not significantly valuable.

• 40% silver strikes were made for collectors. They are limited and valuable.

3. Mint mark

• The mint mark signifies where the coin was struck.

• Some Mints are common, and some are exclusive, making bits with higher values.

• P (Philadelphia) and D (Denver) coins are common.

• S (San Francisco) coins are small in mintage. Most bits coming from San Francisco are proofs and silver issues, which are more valuable.

4. Proof vs. business strike

• Proof coins are specially struck for collectors with sharp details and mirror-like fields.

• Business strikes were made for everyday use. You could even find them as pocket change.

As for bicentennial dollar coin value and half dollars, they have similar value ranges. The bicentennial one-dollar coin value for silver versions is high, but clad coins go for the face value.

Rare Bicentennial Quarter Error Coins

There is one more value factor that we haven’t covered. Errors. We skipped the error factor before because error icons are a unique case every time, and they are too irregular to influence the value charts. Sometimes, an uncirculated clad coin is worth more than its silver version if the clad came with an error.

Errors occur when a coin is struck incorrectly. Sometimes it’s about the machines not working properly, and other times it is due to human error. Whatever the cause of errors, these flawed coins are especially valuable to collectors. Bicentennial quarters had the biggest mintage, so the error probability is higher.

How much is an error coin bicentennial quarter? In most cases, the values are over $15, but the exact value depends on the type of error. These error types can significantly raise the price:

• Off-Center strikes: Due to mismanagement, the coins came off the presses with their designs shifted to the side. Off-centres are more common with older coins, but are less encountered among bicentennial issues. Most off centres are worth $30+.

• Die Breaks / Cuds: A relatively common error. Raised lumps or cracked lines appear where the die has broken. Cuds and wreckers can add minor value, usually $15+.

• Double Die: This error causes doubling on the lettering and dates. It is one of the most valuable errors in the numismatic world and can significantly increase value when pronounced. High-grade DDO examples have sold for thousands of dollars. 

• Wrong planchet strikes: Quarters mistakenly struck on the wrong metal blank (e.g.dime planchets) are extremely rare and highly sought after. 

When an error appears on an already valuable bit (e.g., silver issues), then we can talk about coins worth at least a thousand dollars. Quite a boost for a piece worth 25 cents in most other cases.

Conclusion

Who knows what we will get for the 300th Independence anniversary? Perhaps new quarters, dollars, and half dollars will appear, even more legendary than what we’ve had for the 200-year milestone. It would be hard to outdo the 200th year issue, of course.
