What Does a Quarter In Cod We Trust Mean?

A quarter bearing the inscription "In Cod We Trust" instead of the conventional "In God We Trust" motto located on the obverse (to the right of George Washington's portrait) is not an official release but an error that captivates collectors because of this peculiar pun.

There can be identified two categories that differ in origin and worth:

  • Mint Error (Rare but Possible): There is ongoing controversy about whether any genuine mint errors caused the word "God" to be substituted with "Cod".  A true mint error of this kind would be significantly rare and invaluable. However, no officially verified specimens have been validated by major grading services like NGC or PCGS.

  • Post-Mint Alteration (Most Common): Human nature – this is what it caused. In most cases, the phrase is only a product of post-mint tampering, which means that someone intentionally modified the coin after it entered circulation. It is a joke to some extent, but the degree of novelty and cultural significance makes these pieces desirable.
