This coin is from the America the Beautiful collection, and San Antonio is an important site in Texas in a historical sense. The missions formed a self-sustaining community in the early 1700s. There were farming systems, irrigation channels, workshops, and religious centers.
The reverse design was inspired by Spanish Colonial Reales: wheat means agriculture; arches and a bell - community life; a lion is Spanish influence; a flowing line shows the river system that supported the settlements.

There is a group of missions that had the most important role in the region’s development. Four of them: Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada, are part of the official National Historical Park.

Mission San José is still the “Queen of the Missions.” Mission Concepción is the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States. Mission Espada still has and uses parts of its original aqueduct, and Mission San Juan still has agricultural traditions that once fed the entire region.
“In the 18th century, Spanish priests established these five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River to serve as the center of an ethnically diverse society. Today, the missions – walled compounds encompassing a church and buildings where the priests and local Native Americans lived – represent the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America.”

The location is Texas’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the architecture, irrigation systems, and cultural impact. That status puts the missions in the company of some of the world’s most treasured historical places.
The obverse of the coin keeps the restored Washington portrait. Circulation strikes are from Philadelphia and Denver. San Francisco made both proof and silver-proof versions.
A proof coin is struck with polished dies and extra pressure. They add pressure to create more details. How is it different from regular circulation coins? They are made quickly for everyday use, proofs are made slowly and struck multiple times.
A note for the beginners: San Antonio Missions Quarter D is much different from P, because, as you may guess, they came from different towns (Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco). This quarter costs from 5 to 10 dollars, and the price doesn’t change because of the Mints, but some pieces do.
You can collect this piece with Lowell, American Memorial Park, War in the Pacific, and River of No Return.
