2019 Penny Overview

The 2019 penny is part of the Lincoln cent series, which has been minted since 1909. A lot has changed since the 1909 penny appeared: a new reverse look, a new composition, and new Mints.

Perhaps the only thing that barely changed is the obverse design, made by Victor David Brenner. The front design has stayed the same ever since 1909. This is the longest-running portrait in U.S. coinage history.

Obverse (Front): Abraham Lincoln, designed in 1909 for the centennial of Lincoln’s birth. Lincoln faces right, with detailed features preserved from the original design. You will find inscriptions like IN GOD WE TRUST (above Lincoln’s head), LIBERTY (to his left), and the Date (2019) with possible mint marks.

The reverse, on the other hand, is a recent addition, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Bicentennial designs (2009 penny). The new reverse was designed by Lyndall Bass and sculpted by Joseph Menna.

Reverse (Back): A large Union Shield with 13 vertical stripes (representing the original 13 states). The top part of the shield is adorned with an inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM (“Out of many, one”). A wide scroll draped across the shield reads ONE CENT.

Mint Marks

In 2019, the U.S. Mint struck pennies at Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point. You can find the following varieties:

• No mint mark → Philadelphia

• D → Denver

• S → San Francisco (proof coins)

• W → West Point (special sets in 2019 only)

2019 No Mint Mark Penny

• Mintage number: 3,542,800,000.

• Approximate Values: Mostly face value. Uncirculated examples are $0,35+.

Like usual, Philadelphia made the most coins. The 2019 penny with no mint mark is intended for circulation, so you could get a penny as change.

2019 D Penny

• Mintage number: 3,497,600,000.

• Approximate Values: Mostly face value. Uncirculated examples are $0,35+.

Denver made slightly free pieces. They were also intended for circulation.

2019 S Penny

• Mintage number: 1,062,699.

• Approximate Values: $6+ as proof coins.

San Francisco mainly made proof coins. They did not circulate and were intended for trading and collecting.

2019 W Penny

• Mintage number: about 1,300,000.

• Approximate Values: $12+.

The West Point (W) mint mark was special, as 2019 was the first time pennies were minted there, included as a collectible bonus in proof and mint sets.

The 2019 West Point penny came in different proofs. Some were just uncirculated, and others were complete proofs.

Here is the list of discovered errors:

1. Doubled Dies:

• Obverse Doubled Die (DDO): Look for doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, or the date “2019.”

• Reverse Doubled Die (DDR): Doubling on the shield, scroll (ONE CENT), or letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM.

• The value goes from a few dollars in circulated condition to $50–$200+ for strong examples in high grade. 

2. Off-Center Strikes:

• The design is shifted off-center, leaving part of the blank planchet showing.

• Value depends on how far off-center and whether the date is still visible. Small misalignments are worth $5–$20, and dramatic off-centers are worth $50–$200+.

3. Die Cracks & Die Chips:

• The surface has raised bumps or lines caused by breaks in the die.

• The value is usually $5–$50, depending on size and location. Cuds on the portrait are more valuable.

4. BIE Error:

• A small die breaks between the letters B and E in LIBERTY, making it look like “BIE.” Sometimes appears alongside double dies.

• The value is typically $5–$20.

5. Struck Through Errors:

• If something like grease, cloth, or debris got between the die and the planchet, it can leave missing design details or strange textures.

• The value varies greatly, $10–$100+, depending on how dramatic it is.

6. Wrong Planchet Errors (Very Rare)

• A 2019 penny accidentally struck on a dime, nickel, or foreign coin planchet.

• It can be worth hundreds to thousands of dollars.
