2003 Arkansas Quarter Value and Errors

2003 Arkansas Quarter Value and Errors

State Quarters often feature brilliant designs that excellently reflect their state coins. Perhaps, the Arkansas quarter is the most brilliant among them. Today we will learn about this quarter's errors, value, and its design.

Arkansas State Quarter Overview

In 2003, the 50 State Quarters Program issued the Arkansas 2003 quarter. The Quarter States program was designed to celebrate each state’s unique history, culture, and symbols. For example, with the 2004 Michigan quarter, the U.S. Mint featured the state’s map. What about Arkansas?

Two people worked on the 2003 quarter Arkansas design. John Flanagan made the obverse, and Dortha Delena Shaw Scott made the reverse design.

  • The obverse features President Washington’s portrait. This design is not unique and appeared on many other quarters of the Program (e.g.,  the 2004 Florida quarter).

  • The reverse features a diamond-shaped emblem, representing the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Above the diamond, the inscription reads “The Natural State”. A mallard bird is flying above the lake and rice stalks.

"The sweeping natural beauty of Arkansas clearly and proudly appears on this coin. It is the first United States circulating coin to feature images of rice and a diamond."

2003 Arkansas Rare Error Varieties

Error coins are sought after by collectors. Even if your 2003 Arkansas quarter has a low grade, it still could compare with Silver proofs, as long as it has an error.

Here is the 2003 Arkansas quarter error list with pictures:

Various 2003 Arkansas errors: strikethrough (left), double dies (right).
  1. Double Dies: Coins with noticeable doubling on the inscriptions, particularly on “LIBERTY” or “IN GOD WE TRUST.” These coins can be worth several hundred dollars, depending on the severity of the doubling.

  2. Off-Center Strikes: Coins struck off-center during production. A part of the design might be missing or overlapping the edge. These errors can range in value from $10 to over $50. It all depends on how drastic the shift is.

  3. Die Cracks and Cuds: Raised lines or blobs on the coin resulting from a cracked or chipped die. Collectors value these errors at $5–$20 for minor errors.

  4. Missing Clad Layer: Occasionally, a coin may be missing a layer of the standard copper-nickel coating. Such errors are rare and can be identified by orange. Brown speckles of copper. The error is extremely valuable, sometimes reaching hundreds of dollars.

A few collecting tips as a bonus, before we finish.

  1. It’s best to grade your coins with NGC/PGCC grading services. Grading the bit by yourself might be hard, and not every trader would accept the word of mouth.

  2. If you did acquire a precious Arkansas quarter with an error or high grading, then you should store this coin in a protective case.

  3. And remember, all commemorative coins become more valuable with time. Your Arkansas quarter might be worth just a few dollars today, but in a few decades, its price might triple. Take care of this coin in the meantime.
