Black Toonie – Value, 2022 Issues, and Collector Insights

The 2022 Black Toonie was made as a memorial coin for Queen Elizabeth II after her passing. You can see that it’s a mourning design because of its black outer ring, which is pretty rare, because there were no Canadian coins of such color.

“The $2 Honouring Queen Elizabeth II coin is a solemn tribute to Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022), and this Special Wrap Roll puts 25 of these circulation coins in your collection. Inside the paper wrap that honours Queen Elizabeth II, every coin features a dated 2022 and bearing all the design elements of a standard $2 coin with the introduction of a black outer ring that surrounds the polar bear design on the reverse, and the effigy on the obverse, to form a symbol of mourning.”

Because of the rare occasion and its unique color, collectors began looking for this piece right away. You may find plenty of pieces like that on Amazon and eBay, but most of the time you end up buying a fake one. If you got the issue from there, at least check it with the app to identify coins before doing anything.

Black Toonie Value – How Much Is It Worth?

The black toonie worth is little because it is a modern coin. When the piece was released, rolls sold out instantly. Dealers who managed to secure boxes resold them for $6-10 per coin; complete mint rolls cost $70-100 CAD.

For now, uncirculated pieces from original rolls still sell for about $5-8 each; the circulated examples trade close to $3. But again, the grading won’t give you much for now. Even a pristine proof-like coin can be $10 or more.

You'd better keep the black 2022 toonie and not sell it right away; this is a rushed decision. They don’t cost much right now, but have potential.

How much is a black toonie worth today? More than its face value, though not sky-high unless it’s flawless or has an error. Demand was massive through 2023 and into 2024 because of the uniqueness of the occasion. Even non-collectors joined the rush, so the 2022 black toonie value is one of the strongest among modern Canadian circulation issues.

Notable Errors and Rare Variants

There are no confirmed errors, but mostly rumors. Some 2022 black toonie value error examples have been reported to have uneven plating or partial discoloration on the outer ring.

Coins have weak strikes where the black coating bleeds into the golden center. Also, certain batches came out looking darker; the others are gray, glossy, or patchy.

Conclusion – Why the Black Toonie Is Coveted

The 2022 toonie black edition will likely cost more in the future. For now, you can check the list of rare Canadian coins and see if you have one already.

As for the aforementioned coin, it is a pretty rare occasion (the death of a monarch), and the black coloring of a coin, which means that people, even those not from the collectors' circles, would probably be interested in having it.
