2018 Penny Value – D Mint, No Mint Mark and Error Coin Guide

The 2018 Lincoln Shield penny is a modern one-cent coin from the United States Mint that continues the Lincoln cent series, first introduced in 1909. Its obverse still carries Victor David Brenner’s portrait of Abraham Lincoln, while the reverse features the Union shield design adopted in 2010, meant to symbolize the preservation of the nation as one union.

Is a 2018 penny worth anything? In circulation they are generally only worth face value, though uncirculated or proof examples carry a small premium for collectors. Error coins from this year can be more valuable, but most are common and primarily of interest in pristine condition.

Historical Background

The Lincoln cent was first issued in 1909 to mark the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. It was the first American coin to feature a real person rather than a symbolic figure. Its designer, Victor David Brenner, created the portrait of Lincoln that still appears on the obverse today.

Over the years, the reverse design has changed several times to reflect different aspects of Lincoln’s legacy. From 1909 to 1958, the cent displayed two wheat ears (prosperity).

Beginning in 1959, the Lincoln Memorial appeared on the reverse (Lincoln’s enduring influence on the nation).

In 2009, to honor both the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth and the centennial of the coin itself, the U.S. Mint issued four special reverses depicting stages of his life.

The following year, in 2010, the Union Shield design was introduced. It represents the strength of the nation that Lincoln fought to preserve during the Civil War.

By 2018, the Shield reverse was firmly established as the modern face of the Lincoln cent.

2018 Penny Error List

Doubled Die Errors

2018 Shield Cent Doubled Die Obverse Error Misaligned Small Double Ear

Some 2018 Lincoln Shield pennies show doubled images on parts of the design caused during the die-making process. On these coins, letters such as "LIBERTY" or "IN GOD WE TRUST" can appear shadowed or doubled. Collectors prize them because they are visually striking and easy to identify without magnification in strong cases, although subtle examples require closer inspection. The 2018 penny error value for doubled die cents varies depending on how strong and dramatic the doubling appears.

Off-Center Strikes

Another known error involves the coin being struck off-center. When this happens, part of the design is missing, and a blank crescent of metal remains on one side. Slight misalignments are not worth much, but coins that show a dramatic off-center strike while still displaying the date are more valuable. These errors are visually appealing and often attract strong interest from collectors.

Die Cracks and Cuds

Some 2018 cents exhibit die cracks, where raised lines appear on the coin’s surface due to breaks in the die. In more advanced cases, a section of the design is missing altogether, leaving a blob-like feature known as a cud. These 2018 error penny examples are technically mint mistakes, but many collectors enjoy them for their uniqueness. The larger or more noticeable the break, the higher the potential of a 2018 penny worth money.

Broadstrikes and Misaligned Dies

Occasionally, a penny can be struck without the proper collar or with dies that do not align correctly. This results in coins that look wider than normal, with stretched details around the rim, or with designs shifted noticeably out of place. While less dramatic than an off-center strike, these mistakes still command attention because they break from the uniformity expected in modern minting.

Transitional and Wrong Planchet Errors

Though rare, a small number of 2018 pennies may have been struck on a blank intended for another coin, such as a dime or foreign planchet. When this happens, the penny design appears on a wrong-sized or wrong-colored piece of metal. Such errors are unusual for modern minting, and if verified, they can be highly valuable to advanced collectors.

2018 D Penny Error List

For the 2018 penny D, collectors have reported a number of mint errors. How much is a 2018 D penny worth in these cases? These are not common in circulation, but when found, they can carry much more value than a regular cent.

  • Doubled Die Errors – doubling on letters such as LIBERTY or IN GOD WE TRUST; common minor examples bring a few dollars, while strong ones can go higher.

  • Off-Center Strikes – design is shifted off the planchet, leaving part blank; minor shifts are low in value, but 10–50% off-center with the date visible can bring $50–$150+.

  • Die Cracks and Cuds – raised lines or broken metal on the surface, usually near the rim or bust; small cracks are just a few dollars, but large cuds are far more collectible.

  • Broadstrikes / Misaligned Dies – coins struck without the collar or with poorly aligned dies, appearing wider or with shifted details; values usually run from under $20 to higher depending on condition.

  • Wrong Planchet Strikes – struck on a blank meant for another denomination or foreign coin; these are rare and can sell for hundreds of dollars when authenticated.
