Beautiful Quarters was likely one of the most successful coin programs in US history. So many locations were shown and celebrated, and so many coins made and bought. Diversity was very important for the program, and Vicksburg, a port city, did prominently make the cut.
Today, we will learn more about the 2011 quarter, its prices, specifications, errors, and more.
Overview — The 2011 Vicksburg Quarter
This quarter is one of many. To be precise, the Vicksburg 2011 quarter is a part of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful series (2010–2021). This program was set to celebrate the nature of many American states, and the 2011 edition was about Vicksburg, a city that held one of the most important ports for the country.
Design was essential to reflect the grandness of Vicksburg. The classical obverse side was designed by John Flanagan, and the brand-new reverse was designed by Thomas Cleveland.
The obverse features the classic portrait of George Washington. This design has been used on all America the Beautiful quarters.
The reverse depicts the USS Cairo, a gunboat. The ship is sailing along the Yazoo River. While this design is not “stereotypically” beautiful, it represents the engineering power of Vicksburg and its pivotal role during wars.
“The reverse design depicts the U.S.S. Cairo on the Yazoo River as it would have been seen when it served the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.”

Fun fact: The ship (USS Cairo) still exists. It rests within the Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi.

2011 Vicksburg Quarter Value Chart
Two factors mainly affect the value of this quarter. First and foremost, the condition. Secondly, it's the mint mark. To be more precise, it is an “S” (proof) mark or a “P”/”D” coin.
All proof came from the San Francisco mint, while (Un)circulated bits are from either Denver or Philadelphia (less valuable).
Mint Mark | Coin / Condition | Typical Value Range (approx.) |
“P” or “D” | Circulated (VG–XF) | $0.25 – $0.50 |
Uncirculated (MS60–MS66) | $0.60 – $8 | |
“S” | Silver Proof (2011-S 90% silver, PR65–PR69) | $8 – $30 |
2011 Vicksburg Quarter Error List
As you could see from the value charts, most of these quarters go for the face value, unless they are an extremely rare silver issue or are in absolutely perfect condition. What can you do then? You can try to find errors in your coin. Even in a lower condition, a quarter with an error could easily be over $10 in value.
America the Beautiful quarters have shown these errors:

Strike-through: Foreign material (dirt, grease) could get on the planchet during striking. The result is an impression (a “shadow”) on the surface.
Off-center strikes: The design is shifted because the planchet was not properly installed, and the die struck only part of the design.
Die cracks/Die chips/Die break: A class of overall similar errors that look like lines, blobs, or cracks on the surface. They appear due to wear and breakage in working dies.

Conclusion
The 2011 Vicksburg quarter is common in circulation but has found its fanbase. Collectors look for uncirculated/errored examples. A general audience adores the design of this coin, which is unique even among the Beautiful series. Many coins for the program are nature-oriented, and rarely show a man-made structure.
Power, precision. The power of nature and people, that’s what the 2011 Vicksburg quarter is about.
