The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation, placed the slogan "bread for all" upon its banner. FAO aims to improve the efficiency of world food production and distribution and prevention of shortages and hunger. The Universal Declaration on Human Rights recognizes the right of all mankind to a standard of living that affords health and well being. The realization of this right is a collective, global responsibility. Aware of the importance of coins as an educational media, the FAO launched a Money and Medal Program in 1968, aimed at conveying its message in this way. Israel, together with 50 other nations, joined the program by issuing this coin.
